Does your Tyre Need Replacing?

There are laws in place in the UK that require a tyre to comply with a number of requirements in order for you to legally be allowed to drive them on the roads. These requirements range from the relevant sidewall markings- the numbers the manafacturer is responsible for, to the correct fitment and condition of your tyre, for example the tread depths.

We recomend that you check your tyres regularly- on a weekly basis, for tread condition and depth, inflation pressure, sidewall or tread damage and for any signs of irregular wear. If in doubt, please come and have them checked by our trained tyre experts in any of our branches, who will determine whether the tyres are legal for further use on the roads.

Must - Know Laws

A cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre , whichever is the greater, measured in any direction on the outside of the tyre and deep enough to reach the ply or cord would deem the tyre illegal. If there is any cut in the tyre no matter how small which exposes cords, then the tyre is illegal.

The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light trailers up to 3500 kgs gross vehicle weight and/or eight seated passenger vehicles including driver is 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference. If the tyre causes damage to the road, to any person, or to any vehicle using the road, for example if a vehicle with damaged or very oversized tyres which either caught against a person or other vehicle resulting in either damage or injury is deemed illegal.

Studded tyres are included in the clause above and if used inappropriately, for example, where there is not snow or ice, and they damage the road surface then they would also be illegal. If your tyres are under the legal minimum, or do not comply with the laws shown above you could potentially face a fine of up to £2500 and 3 penalty points on your license per tyre! So please come in and speak to one of our trained tyre experts today, or send an enquiry below.
